“Oh. Err… She just started working with me at the university.” Des shrugged. “She’s cool.”

Sawyer’s eyes went even flintier.

“Of course she’s cool,” Agatha boomed, loud enough to make us all jump. “She’s a Proctor. I knew her grandmother. Cool is in her genetics.”

“It’s good she’s finally moving in,” Sally murmured. “We need to keep an eye on her…”

“Seems like someone already is,” Flo said, staring at Sawyer.

His teeth ground together in annoyance. With one last, scathing look at the house next door, he stalked down the walk, crossed the street, and disappeared into the night.

Curiouser and curiouser…

A hand hit the small of my back, warm and strong. I looked up at Cade and smiled.

“Take me home, Hero-Hair.”

“You got it, Goldie.”

We waved one final goodbye to our friends. Then, I slid onto the back of Cade’s sleek black motorcycle, wound my arms tight around his middle, and held on as he drove me across town.

Back to Socks, who had doubled in size and now took up the vast majority of our bed at night.

Back to our shingled fixer-upper on Juniper Point.
