“I just miss the big goon, that’s all. I tried calling him a few days ago, but he didn’t call me back.” Harper shakes her head in frustration. “I know he’s busy in post-production, and that we’ll probably see him more often now, with the press tour starting up and the premiere approaching… butstill. He could’ve at least called me back.”
“Mmmm,” I murmur.
“Have you heard from him? I’m sure he’d never ignoreyou…”
You might be surprised, Harper…
I think about the calls that have gone unanswered over the past month, the text messages I’ve sent sporadically in the small hours of the night, all with no reply.
Please call me back.
Please let me explain.
Please, Wyatt.
I remember the look in his blue eyes, usually so full of light, glittering instead with ice and furious incomprehension. I replay the last words he spoke to me, when he caught me sneaking out his front door, still stunned by the shocking intimacy of our drunken night together.
Just go. Just get out. I don’t want to listen to you. Frankly, I can’t even look at you.
He’s made it pretty clear he doesn’t want to see me. Doesn’t want to hear from me.
And I don’t blame him.
I offer nothing more than misery.
“You agree that it’s weird, right?” Harper asks, curling the last section of my hair. “For him to just disappear on us with no reason…” She pauses, eyes narrowing. “Unless thereisa reason…”
I blink innocently, keeping my expression blank.
“…nothing happened between you two, did it? You didn’t have a fight, or something?”
I don’t answer.
She tugs sharply on a strand of hair to get my attention. “Hello? Did you hear me?”
“Sorry. Maybe my coffee hasn’t kicked in yet.” I take a deep breath. “I haven’t seen him in forever either. Anyway, is my hair done? It looks like it’s done, and I should really be getting back on set, so…” Avoiding her gaze, I push to my feet.
She watches me with narrowed eyes. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Nothing.”
My bare toes press against the cold tile, grounding me.
“Katharine Firestone, are you lying to me right now?”
“Harper, I don’t have time for this. They’re waiting for me on set.”
“Oh my god!” Her jaw drops open. “Something happened between you and Wyatt!”
“No.”
“Something happened and you’relyingabout it!”
“I am not,” I lie.
“You just did that weird head-tilt thing! You only do that when you’re nervous that I’m about to catch you in a lie.”
“Maybe I’m just nervous about spending the day pressed up-close-and-personal against the man who broke my heart.”
