“For tonight. And for agreeing to help me. It really means a lot that you’d do this for me.”
“I’d do anything for you,” I say, looking her way. Her smile is soft as she rolls to reach over me to switch off my lamp, flushing the room with darkness, pressing herself up against me. I would sell my soul to have Nash’s body flush with mine and have it be real. I have to keep reminding myself that it’snot. Nash is single-minded. There’s no room in her life for any love other than volleyball, which is obvious because how else would we have ended up in this scenario if not for her love of the sport?
“We’d better get some sleep. It’s a long drive home tomorrow, and the rules of I-45 state that you have to have at least one near-death experience on the way.” She rolls back to her side, settling in the covers. I lie still, messing with my necklace, not wanting to keep her awake with my inevitable tossing and turning until I hear her breathing even out.
It’s a long time before sleep finds me.
HOUSTON HEATS UP: Local sports stars spark a new power couple.
Tea Spill Tribune - Houston
Hottie Hurricanes player spotted with a new gal, see inside for all the pictures and our scoop.
Houston Hurricanes defensive lineman, Wyatt Vandergrif (27), was spotted at the NFL Honors over the weekend with a local woman named Nashville Green (27) who is currently a starting hitter for the Houston Moons women’s volleyball team.
When he won Sack Leader of the Year, he said this of Green, “…it would be possible for [her] to brighten the stars on [her] way to hang the moon, if she wanted to.”
Eagle-eyed fans spotted the couple earlier in the month, enjoying late night Whataburger, cuddled in a booth sharing a milkshake, and the lineman only had eyes for her.
While we don’t know much about her (yet), we can’t wait to see this new pair light up the downtown skyline.
Chapter Twenty
WYATT
I wake up to sunlight streaming through the crack in the hotel curtains and something perpetually buzzing. Nash’s slender leg is thrown haphazardly over my thigh. She must have rolled around during the night because she fell asleep facing away from me. It felt like a defensive measure—from what, I’m not sure. Maybe last night was more than she could take. Maybe being with me in public like that was harder than she thought it would be. I hope that isn’t the case, but she was unreadable last night. She starts to move in her sleep, and I freeze, not wanting to disturb her. Her leg starts moving farther up my thigh and I have to bite down on my lip to keep from making any noise as she just barely grazes my junk with her knee. Oh fuck. I’m being split in two. Half of me is a little worried she’s going to knee me in the balls, and the other half is ready to go to war to earn more of her touch. I don’t want it to be an accident. I want it to be purposeful.
The noise starts up again, startling me out of my lustful thoughts. For a second I think it’s a fly whizzing by my ear, but when I look at the nightstand for something to swing at itwith, I realize it’s my phone. I think about ignoring it and trying to go back to sleep, but as I watch, ten new texts come in, so I give in to my curiosity. What could everyone possibly be talking about this early on a Sunday.
Oh, fuck. It’s me.
The group text with me and my Hurricanes teammates seems to be the most persistent, so I start there.
