“Evening, Helen,” the cab driver greeted.

“Does everyone in town know you?”

She shrugged. “More like they know of my boss and want to keep me on side.”

I fastened my seatbelt. “What do you do?”

She leaned in and whispered close to my ear, “I can’t tell you.” Goosebumps scattered across my skin. I waited for her to laugh or answer my question, but she did neither. I turned my head toface her, so close that I could taste the mint she’d popped in her mouth as we left the pub on her breath.

“Seriously,” I murmured.

She kept her voice low, obviously not wanting to be overheard. “I’m being serious. All I can say is that Thomas is a good man, and the company does amazing things.”

My fingers itched to touch her, to slip under the dress she was wearing and trace patterns on her soft thighs, but instead, I tried to focus my thoughts on something else. “Very mysterious. Do you enjoy it?”

“I love it.” She offered me that smile that made me weak for her.

“I guess that’s all that matters then,” I managed to reply as my cock thickened in my jeans at the idea of waking up next to her, knowing I’d put that smile on her face.

We travelled the rest of the way in comfortable silence and were back in the house in no time. Helen threw her keys on the side table and kicked her shoes off, letting out a long sigh.

“Right, I’m off to bed. Night, Jax.” She stepped onto the stairs.

“You know you could do better than that guy?”

She turned, staring at me like I’d lost my mind. “He seemed interested. He’s texted me twice already.” She held out her phone as if to prove her point.

“He’s interested because he knows you’re way out of his league.”

She scoffed. “That’s sweet of you to say, but I don’t think I’d qualify to be in a league. I’m not sure I’m cut out for any of this stuff. Beggars can’t be choosers.”

I tilted my head, trying to consider my words. “You deserve to be someone’s queen, not picking up the scraps you think you deserve.”

Helen didn’t speak for a moment, but then she curtsied, giving me a glimpse of her large breasts as the front of her dress sagged slightly.

“I appreciate your words, kind sir, but not all of us get the fairy tale happy ending.” She gave me a smile but it lacked the warmth it normally had. “Now, I’m off for my beauty sleep.”

Chapter 8

Jax

“How are things with my mum? She’s not being too much of a nightmare, is she?” Jasper asked as he set up the balls on the pool table.

“No, she’s amazing.”

Jasper laughed. “Yeah, she is, isn’t she? I was worried about her after she and Dad split, but she seems okay in the new house, right?”

I shrugged, trying not to think of Helen wandering around in her gym gear this morning, the Lycra clinging to her curves, making me so hard I had to make my excuses and go jerk off in the shower.

“I think so.”

I watched as he lined up his cue and struck the white ball, sending the others careering around the table.

“But enough about my mum. How’s work?” He potted the first ball.

“Good. I’m really enjoying it and the crew is great. It’s nice to be back here.” He hit another ball, putting it in the far left pocket. “What’s new with you?”

He shook his head. “Young, free, and single.” His next ball missed the pocket, bouncing off the cushion. “I’m not ready to settle down yet. You must feel the same, right?”
