As I watched her naked ass cross the room, knowing my cum was leaking from her, I wondered what I’d done to deserve someone like her. Then I panicked about how much she could hurt me if I let her get under my skin any more than she already had.

“You know, I’ve almost forgotten what brought us here. I had the best time with you, Myth Maker.”

“Right back at ya, Princess.” Charlie smiled, but his face looked anything but happy.

“What’s up?”

“Nothing. Why’d you ask?”

“Because you look like a wounded puppy.” I sat on the bed, moving the cases we were packing to go home, and tapped the space next to me. “Talk to me.”

He sighed, sitting and taking my hand. “I don’t want to go home. Everything will go back to how it was. I don’t want that.”

I ran my fingers through his beard before cupping his cheek. “I don’t want that either. I told you that, didn’t I?”

“You did. But you’re a busy, important head of communications.”

“And you’re a world famous rock star. Or did you forget that?”

He shrugged. “I don’t feel like that around you.”

I rubbed my thumb up and down his cheek, loving the feel of him under my fingers. “What do you need to hear, Charlie?”

His eyes widened, and he jerked his head back, breaking our connection. “Nothing.”

“This won’t work unless we can talk.”

“Fine.” His voice was sad and monotone, so unlike the version of him that I’d had with me this week. “I don’t want this to end. I don’t want to go back to how we were. I don’t want to just be friends.”

“Okay.”

“I like being around you. I like what we’ve found this week. I like this.”

“And I like it too.”

“But?” And there he was. The vulnerable boy Charlie fought so hard to hide. Unable to stay away, I crawled into his lap, straddling him and taking his face in both my palms.

“But nothing. I promise I want to keep seeing you. I want to explore what we have in the real world… I just need you to give me some time. I need to take things slowly.”

Charlie’s eyes fluttered closed as he let out a sad sigh.

“Look at me, Charlie.” His brown eyes fixed on mine while he waited for my next words. “I like you. I want to keep seeing you. What about that aren’t you hearing?”

He twisted his fingers through my hair. “It’s just—”

I stopped him before he could say anything else. “You know, the pouty schoolboy look does something for me, but you don’t need to worry. Things are going to be a bit weird for a while. I have to sort outhe who should not be namedbecause I can’t let him get away with what he did to me and I’ve just started a new job, but I’m not going anywhere. I want this. I want you.”

“Promise,” he whispered.

“Pinky promise,” I declared, wrapping our little fingers together. “And they can’t ever be broken.”

Chapter 21

“Well, here we are,” I mumbled as the driver pulled up outside my house.
