“Matteo,” Enzo says as the man approaches him. They share a handshake. The rest I can’t hear but I notice them looking over at me. After a moment, Matteo walks over to me, while Enzo watches.
“You must be Kira, Enzo’s wife. I’m Matteo. A friend of Enzo’s.”
“Then why weren’t you at our wedding?” I would have remembered a handsome man like him there.
“I was out of town. Enzo and I have been friends for years. I felt bad for missing it. But I’m back now.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” I glance at Enzo, who’s still watching, before I turn back to Matteo. “Why don’t you sit down? We can get to know one another.”
With a chuckle, Matteo sits down beside me. Maybe a little bit closer than he should, given that my husband is watching but I don’t care. Let Enzo feel a little jealous that I’mtalking to another man. I’m still angry with him for making me feel jealous in the first place.
“How has married life been treating you?” he asks.
I flip my hair over my shoulder. “It’s been horrible. Enzo is a bad husband.”
“That’s a shame. A beautiful woman like you should have a wonderful husband.”
“I know, right?”
Matteo’s little smile makes my heart flutter. He is disarmingly handsome. With a glance at Enzo, I see him scowling in our direction. Good.
“You are not shy, are you?” Matteo asks me.
“Not one bit.”
“It’s a dangerous game, flirting with another man right before your husband’s eyes.”
I wave a dismissive hand. “Enzo can deal.”
“But I should probably go before Enzo gets angry with me. Have a nice day, Kira.” He walks away before I can say anything else. I pout.
Enzo comes storming over to my side the moment Matteo leaves. “What was that?”
“What was what?” I ask as innocently as I can, batting my eyelashes.
“You and Matteo. You were flirting with him.”
“Was I?”
“I have eyes, Kira.”
I stand up – which isn’t graceful with my crutches. “So do I. You and Crystal were flirting with each other and yet, you tried to deny it.”
“So you flirted with Matteo to get under my skin. Is that it?”
“Matteo is handsome. Why wouldn’t I flirt with him? I’ve flirted with a lot of men before.”
“Because you’re married to me.”
“And you’re married to me,” I snap back, getting as close to his face as I can.
Enzo smirks as he stares me down. “You are trouble.”
“You knew that and still married me. So who’s fault is it?”
In one smooth motion, he picks me up into his arms bridal style.
“What are you doing?” I ask as he walks me towards his office, leaving my crutches behind.
