“I know, but…” Her breath hitched, her chest heaving as she struggled to take a full breath. “When I go home, there won’t be anyone waiting for me.”
“Lizzy,” I treaded carefully. “We could call him.”
She shook her head vehemently, the tears spilling down her cheeks as she furiously wiped at them. “No, we’re not.”
“But—”
“I never want to see him again.”
Sighing, I knew it was pointless to keep trying. “Will you at least tell me who he is?”
She shook her head again, swiping the last of the tears from her face as she struggled to gain control. “It doesn’t matter. It won’t ever matter.”
“But—”
“No,” she snapped, her tone perfectly clear. This was not up for discussion, and it never would be.
“Okay,” I said gently. “We won’t talk about it ever again.”
“Good.” She sucked in a deep breath, squeezing her eyes shut. “I just need you to be there when I start losing my nerve, okay?”
Surprised, I leaned away from her. “Um…are we talking about during the delivery, or when you want to tell everyone about the bastard who abandoned you?”
“The second,” she murmured, breathing through a contraction.
“Will you tell me?”
“Nope.” She tilted her head back, breathing out in one long breath.
“Better?”
She nodded, blinking back tears. “It’s going to be fine. He doesn’t matter. Not even a little.”
“Are you sure about that? I mean, what if he wants to know about the baby?”
She shot me a look, irritated that I even suggested it.
“Okay, never mind.”
“I just want to get through this and know that I’m doing what’s best for my baby.”
I wasn’t so sure that keeping the father from his child was what was best, but it wasn’t my place to say a damn thing, and since I didn’t know who the father was, I couldn’t say a thing if I wanted to.
“What do you need right now?”
She huffed out a laugh, relaxing into the bed. “Sleep.”
“Well, I don’t think you’re getting any of that anytime soon, but I can definitely keep you entertained until the baby comes.”
“You can tell me about that hot man of yours.”
That had me laughing. “One, he’s not my hot man. Second, there’s nothing more to tell than what I’ve already said.”
“But you have his boss’s number. You could call him up and find him.”
“If I wanted to, which I don’t. Trust me, this is for the best.”
“Somehow, whenever someone says trust me, I always think there’s a lie in there.”
