A sadness filled the other man’s eyes. “From everyone.”
“Enough of this bullshit.” Brody pushed the gun a smidge harder against the guy’s forehead.
“It’s not bullshit. I swear! I-I’ll call Tommy right now. H-he’ll tell you everything!”
“As long as you say it’s okay.”
“Jesus Christ, man. I’m not a goddamn killer, okay? I didn’t even realize what had happened until Ro was already down, and whoever did it was gone!”
“You expect us to believe you were so enthralled in your secret backstage meeting with Tommy Carrigan that you didn’t notice an active shooter situation until it was over? What could the two of you havepossiblybeen discussing that was so important it took you away from your own party?”
“P-please.”
“What were you talking about?”
“We weren’t talking!”
“Then what the fuckwereyou doing?”
“Having sex!” Yorke’s shouted confession echoed off the walls around them. “Tommy and I were…” A defeated sigh. “We met in the supply closet behind the stage to have sex.”
The entire penthouse grew silent. Brody blinked but didn’t speak. And for the next several seconds, no one uttered a single sound.
Nearly laughing at the idiot’s lie, he kept the weapon steady. “You expect us to believe you’re gay?” he challenged. “You do realize I have a gun pointed at your head.”
“I’m aware, y-yes.” The man was literally shivering in his socked feet. “But I swear, what I said was the truth.”
“Bullshit.” This came from Cade. “I’ve seen the women you parade around town.”
“Different one every week,” Liam quipped.
Brody kept his eyes on Yorke, searching for the first sign of deception as he added, “And I saw the way you were with Ro that night at the bar.”
“Jesus, man. That night was all a show!” Yorke’s shoulders fell with a pathetic sigh. “Every goddamn night is a show.”
“Explain.”
“I’m the only child—the onlyname-bearingchild—of the great and powerful Yorkes. You think my family…you think myfatherwould accept a homosexual as a son? Especially since I’m his only chance of carrying on the family name?”
“Dude, it’s not Nineteen Fifty-Two,” Jagger pointed out. “Nobody cares if you’re gay.”
“Yeah, well, you’ve never met my father. “A slight tremble of the man’s chin. “He cares. He cares a great deal.”
“So what happens if he finds out you’re gay?” Cade asked.
“What do you think? I’ll be cut out, that’s what!”
“Your parents would seriously take you out of the will just because you like dudes?” Christian arched a brow.
“In a heartbeat.” The beat-down man didn’t hesitate in his response. “That’swhy I make sure to be seen with a different woman every week. And that’s why I sometimes act the way I sometimes did with Aurora. I just needed her to think…I needed whoever waswatchingus to think that I was what the world expects me to be.”
“Billiondaire playboy?” Jagger guessed.
Yorke slid a weary look in the other man’s direction. “Chicago’s most eligible bachelor.”
The man practically spat the title out as if it were a curse.
If he’s telling the truth, it probably is.
