A group of large trees clustered together caught her eye. If she could get to them, she’d be able to crouch down behind them and hide.

Determined to do whatever it took to make it out of this insanity alive, she headed for her goal. Once there, she shifted behind them and waited.

Soft footfalls reached her ears over the sound of her racing heart. Fear turned her blood to ice, and the gun in Emma’s hand shook.

Rolling her lips inward, she clamped her mouth shut to keep a whimper of terror from escaping. The footsteps grew nearer. He was almost to her, now.

You’re going to have to shoot him. It’s your only option.

Emma closed her eyes and prepared to kill again. Growing up, her father had preached about all sorts of sins...but more than any, the Ten Commandments had always stuck with her. And one of those?

Thou shall not kill.

I’m sorry, Daddy. I didn’t have a choice. Not before...and not now.

Giving the circumstances, her father would most definitely understand. Just as he understood the unfortunate circumstances that sometimes arose during the course of Coop’s job.

Focus, Ems. You have to stay focused.

With a slight shake of her head, Emma did her best to keep the gun steady. As soon as she saw the first sign of the bastard tracking her, she was going to jump out and shoot.

Swallowing her fear, she waited for the exact right moment. When she heard a twig beside her snap, she knew it had come.

Emma jumped out from behind the tree, aimed her gun at the man in front of her, and pulled the trigger.

Chapter 14

With Trevor, Derek, Grant, and Coop by his side, Trace trekked through the woods outside Sadiq Khaled’s suspected location.

Mac had assured Coop she’d be safe with Olivia at the hospital, giving Coop the ability to join the op in an effort to save his sister.

Though he could tell the other man was worried about his fiancée, Trace also knew Coop’s love for his sister ran deep. It was a tough situation, but given the extra security Mac, Olivia, and Jake currently had, there really was no other choice.

Despite Ryker’s earlier claim, it had taken longer than an hour to get everything put together for the flight into Mexico. Once their weapons and gear were loaded, they’d run through a quick but efficient plan to get onto the property where they believed Emma was being held.
