“I’m kidding.” With his hands in the air, the smartass turned back toward his sister. “I’m only kidding.”

Trace wasn’t so sure.

While Coop borrowed his phone to call Mac and give her an update, Trace went over to where Emma was standing. The blood had been cleaned from her face and there was a small, white strip covering the cut on her chin.

“The medics check you out?”

“They did, and I’m fine.”

Some of the tension in his muscles finally began to ease.

“So, what the hell happened?” Coop asked no one in particular as he handed Trace the phone.

As quickly as he could, Trace and Emma gave her brother the cliff-notes version. They were in the middle of discussing the possible connection between the two attacks when Trace’s phone began to ring.

“It’s Trevor.” He recognized the number this time. Assuming he was calling about the shooting, Trace put the phone on speaker. “Hey, Trev. Emma and I are okay. Suspect’s down.”

“That makes three.”

The man’s words left the entire group confused.

“What?” Trace asked his interim boss.

Coop didn’t give the man time to answer. “What do you mean, three?”

“I just got off the phone with Derek. Someone blew up his car.”

“What?”

The question was spoken in unison by the entire group.

“Ah, hell.” Coop shook his head. “D’s gonna be pissed. Helovedthat car.”

“Yeah, well, D’s damn lucky he wasn’t in the car. Bomber wired it to the ignition. Thankfully Derek was on his porch and used the automatic start on his key fob. If he hadn’t...”

Trevor didn’t need to finish that sentence. They all knew exactly what would’ve happened if Derek had been sitting in the car...or even standing nearby...when it exploded.

“That’s not all,” Trevor continued. “Grant called while I was still talking to Derek. He caught a guy trying to plant a bomb outside his and Brynnon’s cabin.”

“What the fuck?” Coop fumed.

“Was he able to detain him?” Eric spoke up.

“In a manner of speaking. The guy got off one shot before Grant took him down.”

Jesus Christ.Trace spun his gaze to Eric. With a raised brow, he said, “Think that’s enough proof for your boss?”

“They’re not just coming after me.” Emma looked at Trace and then her brother. “They’re coming after us all.”
