“Seriously?” She shot his hand—and then his eyes—an annoyed glare. “I was dreaming, Trace. I’ve already apologized.Twice.What more do you want?”

“Are you?”

She exhaled, using Herculean strength not to growl. “Am I what?”

“Sorry?”

Emma blinked. “What?”

Releasing her arm, she thought he would take a step back. Instead, he moved closer. Brought his hand to her face, tucking a few chin-length strands behind her ear.

“Are you really sorry you kissed me?”

Lie to the man. Say yes.

Say. Yes!

“No.” She whispered the truth.

Heat flourished behind his intense stare. Grays turned to blues, and one corner of the lips she could still taste lifted ever so slightly.

“Good.” His hand fell away. Tracedidtake a step back, then. “Goodnight, Emma.”

What the heck just happened?

Feeling even more confused than before, Emma used the moment to escape. Retreating across the room, she was reaching for the covers when she heard his soul-deep voice once more.

“Iamtrying to be a gentleman, so I feel it’s only fair to warn you.”

Warn me?She glanced back at him from over her shoulder.

“I stopped this time.” The muscles in his strong jaw twitched. “But you kiss me like that again, and I’ll make that dream of yours a reality.”

Oh. My. God.

Breath caught inside her chest, Emma couldn’t think of a single thing to say. So, like a complete coward, she wordlessly crawled under the covers.

Laying with her back to his, she spent what felt like forever pretending to be asleep until finally, blessedly, she fell into an unconscious abyss.
