“Thanks, but they’ve given me all they can, for now. Since I lost consciousness more than once, they don’t want to give me anything too powerful, just yet.”

“I’m sorry you were hurt. And Jake...” The look on her boss’s face as he’d ordered her out of the building flashed before her eyes. “Do you think he’ll wake up?”

A fierceness fell upon Mac’s gorgeous face. “Jake’s one of the strongest men I know. If anyone can make it out of this, it’s him.”

Playing with the drawstring on her borrowed scrub pants, Emma let a long stretch of silence pass before she spoke again.

“This is all so surreal.” She lifted her weary head. “Jake seems like such a good guy. Who would want to do this to him?”

To any of them.

Determination burned within Mac’s baby blues. “I don’t know, but you’d better believe your ass, we’re going to find them.”

The woman wasn’t just saying the words. She meant them.

“Why are you here?”

Trace studied Coop closely, wondering if the man had some sort of undiagnosed traumatic brain injury.

“There was an explosion.” He exaggerated the slow speed at which he spoke. “We got blown off our asses, remember?”

“Don’t be a smartass.” Coop scowled. He grabbed Trace’s elbow and led him down the hall a few feet, away from Mac’s door.

Glancing down, Trace focused on where the man’s hand was still clutching his arm.

You’re going to want to remove that before I do it for you.

As though he could read Trace’s mind, Coop dropped his hand and took a step back. A set of hazel eyes matching Emma’s narrowed to thin slits.
