“Trevor said Mac was concussed, but that she’d be okay. And I’ve known Trev a long time. He doesn’t bullshit when it comes to that sort of thing.”

“Good.” Relief poured over her. “And Jake? I didn’t get a g-good look at him as we left, b-but he has to be hurt pretty badly, right? I mean, he was r-right there when the b-bomb...

“They’re taking good care of him, sweetheart.” The term of endearment slipped out. “I know it’s hard but try to relax. We’ll be at the hospital soon. Once you’re cleared, I’ll personally take you to go see Jake and Mac, both. Deal?”

With a hesitant nod, she agreed. “Deal.”

Blinking, Emma released a tear from the corner of her eye. The droplet dampened the stark white pillow below her head.

With his forearms resting on his knees, Trace’s fisted hands hung between them as he fought against the urge to reach for her.

Surprising him once again, Emma stretched her left arm toward him and placed her free hand over his.

“Thank you.”

Trace glanced down, the sight of their joined hands doing something to him. Something inexplicable.

Something that scared him to death.

Despite the turmoil brewing inside him, he lifted his gaze to hers and said, “You’re welcome.”

Emma’s knee bouncedup and down anxiously as she waited for the nurse to bring her the discharge papers.

She needed to see her brother. Make sure Mac and Jake were okay.

Please let them be okay.

Despite her numerous inquiries, no one with the hospital staff had been able to tell her anything about their condition since coming here.

At Trace’s insistence, she’d been poked, prodded, and scanned to the point she was sure she wouldn’t need another routine checkup for at least five years.
