“Soph?” He pulled back just enough to see her face, unsure of what he’d done to hurt her. “What is it, baby?”

Holding her right arm snuggly against her, Sophie slid a glance to the man lying in a pool of his own blood. “It’s my arm. It broke when he hit us, and the car rolled into that field.”

A murderous rage toward a dead man engulfed him. Jason felt the angry burn deep inside his chest

The fire grew. He brought a hand to his chest, rubbing against the source in order to ease the discomfort there.

Sophie was okay. He had to remind himself of that. Her arm was hurt, but she was still here despite Moore’s efforts to take her away from him.

Jason rubbed his chest harder because...Christ, that hurts.

The pain was almost unbearable, now. He pulled his hand back and glanced down, confused when he saw blood.

What the...

His knees started to give out.

“Jason!” Sophie reached for him with her good arm. “Oh, my god! He’s been shot!”

I have?

He looked down at his chest. The crimson stain spreading across his stark white shirt undeniable.

Well, hell.

“I need help!” Sophie screamed down the hall to someone he couldn’t see.

The panic in her voice registered as Jake and Trevor grabbed onto him to keep him from falling. They carefully laid him down onto the floor.

“Gunshot wound to the right upper chest!” Jason felt Sophie’s hand rubbing along his back. “Anterior entry, no exit wound!”

Shit. That meant the bullet was still in him.

“I’m...okay,” he lied.

“Shh...don’t talk.” Sophie yanked his shirt open, buttons flying as she began assessing his wound.

Several staff members rushed over to them. In seconds, he was moved to a gurney and rushed down the hall. Sophie spouted off all sorts of medical shit he didn’t understand, but that was okay.

He was content just watching her.

She’s incredible.

Sophie was in doctor-mode, now. Seeing her in action had always amazed him. Seeing it fromthisperspective gave him a whole new appreciation for what she did.

“Soph...” He reached for her, his arm struggling to follow his mental command.

Why does it feel so heavy?

“I’m here.” She grabbed his hand with her uninjured one. “I’m right here, and you’re going to be just fine.”

It was the first time she’d ever lied to him.

Jason felt himself fading. His vision began closing in all around him, and...he knew he was dying.

But before he did, before he left this world and the woman walking beside him behind, he had to tell her...

“L-love...you.” She needed to know that.
