Jason ran to the nurseworking the front desk. “Have you seen Dr. Ruiz?”
Alarmed by his sudden appearance and excited tone, she shook her head. “No. Dr.Ruiz isn’t on the schedule for tonight.”
“I know she’s not on the schedule. I’m asking if you’ve seen her.”
“What about this man?” Jake held up a picture of Colton Moore.
“The dead guy? Uh, no.” She chuckled. “Haven’t seen him, either, except for on the news. Did something happen? Is Dr. Ruiz in some sort of trouble?”
Ignoring her, Jason, Jake, and Trevor proceeded to ask the same questions to every employee they saw. They all had the same answer.
No one had seen Sophie or Moore.
“Fuck!” Jason’s loud voice boomed.
“Easy, Ryker. Your phone’s still pinged to this location. They have to be here.”
“Just because my phone’s here, doesn’t mean Sophie’s still here.”
Or that she’s still alive.
“She’s here,” Trevor assured him. “We just have to keep looking.”
Jason felt as though he was losing his damn mind. He couldn’t lose her. Not now. Not when they’d just—
“Did you say you’re looking for Dr.Ruiz?” A soft voice reached their ears from behind.
All three men spun around to see a middle-aged nurse facing them.
“Yes!” Jason blurted. “Have you seen her?”
“Yeah.”
He began a succession of rapid-fire questions.
“When?”
“Just a couple of minutes ago. Why, is something—”
“Where did you see her?
“S-she was in the employee locker room.”
“Was she alone?”
“No. There was a man with her.”
“Is this him?” Jake showed her the same picture of Moore.
“Yeah. I mean, he had a hat on, but I’m pretty sure that was him.”
“Let’s go!”
Jason took off in a dead sprint down the hallway toward the locker room. Because this hospital was his creation, he knew exactly where the room was located.
Hold on, baby. I’m coming.
With Jake and Trevor in tow, they were halfway to the place Sophia was last seen when a gunshot blasted, the echoing sound stopping Jason’s entire world.
