Chapter 11

––––––––

Sophie moaned, herhead throbbing as she peeled her eyes open and looked around. She was dizzy, her mind feeling as though it was floating, somehow.

But then she shifted in her seat, setting off an almost unbearable pain in her right wrist.

She sucked in a sharp breath. Using her left hand, she carefully brought the injured limb to her chest and did a quick assessment.

“Shit. I think my wrist is broken.” She blinked a few times to bring the car’s interior into focus. “Are you okay?”

Turning, Sophie was instantly filled with fear when she saw Jason slumped over toward her. Blood oozed from a gash in his forehead near his hairline, most likely from smacking against his window, and he wasn’t moving.

“Jason!” Adrenaline shot through her veins, kicking her ass in gear.

Doing her best to keep her right arm steady against her chest, Sophie reached down with her left and clicked her seatbelt free.

Ignoring the pain in her head and wrist, she turned her entire body so that it was facing Jason head-on. “Jason?” She reached out and felt for a pulse.

Please be alive. Oh, god. Please let him still be alive.

She found a pulse! It was faint and thready, but it was there.

Phone. I need to get my phone and call for an ambulance.

Looking down, Sophie nearly cried when she realized her purse was no longer in the floorboard near her feet, where she’d placed it. With a quick visual search, she spotted it in the back seat, well out of her reach.

“Damn it.”

Jason’s phone. Use. Jason’s. Phone!

Not wanting to move him for fear he may have a spinal injury, Sophie reached over the console and felt his right pocket.

There!

She could feel the device, but the way he was sitting made it nearly impossible for her to pull it free. Not one to give up easily, she continued grasping and pulling, all the while keeping her right arm as still as she could.

After what seemed like forever, Sophie gave it all she had and finally—blessedly—yanked the phone free.

“Hang on, honey,” she told a still-unconscious Jason. “I’m getting us help.”

Tears threatened to make an appearance when she saw he had a passcode set up on his phone. But then she saw that it was asking for his thumbprintorpasscode, so she balanced the phone on the console, grabbed his limp hand, and maneuvered his thumb in order to access it.

Hand shaking, she started to call for an ambulance when his phone began to ring. Sophie jumped at the unexpected noise, but then quickly answered the call when she saw Jake McQueen’s name on the screen.

“Jake!”

“Sophie?”

“Oh, thank god. Jason’s hurt! Can you send help?”
