“Hey, Soph!” Olivia smiled wide. “How are you feeling?”
“Good, actually. Arm’s a little sore, but good.”
Other parts were sore, too, but in the very best of ways. Of course, she wasn’t about to share that with her friend. Not when the woman’s husband and Jason were standing right there, too.
“Sophie.” Jake gave her a gentle hug. “I was sorry to hear about what happened. You sure you’re all right?”
“I’m fine. Really. Just a string of bad luck, I guess.”
Olivia and Jake each huffed out a laugh, but Jason was still stuck in Agent mode. Understanding the importance of focusing on one’s job, she didn’t fault him for this.
“Like I said in my text, I don’t know how long this is going to last.”
“Take your time.” Jake gave Jason a nod. “I’ve already talked to Trevor. He’s going to be on-site to oversee the security installation at Sophie’s house in case Derek and the others need any added support.”
“Thanks, man.” Jason shook Jake’s hand. “I appreciate it.”
“No thanks needed.”
“I’ll keep you posted.” Jason turned to her. “I’ll get back as soon as I can.”
“Stop worrying about me. Go do your thing.”
For a second, she thought he might kiss her. But since their budding relationship was barely beginning to sprout, she understood why he didn’t want to put on a show for their audience.
“You’ve got your phone?” He glanced down at her purse.
“Phone...and shoes.” Sophie lifted a foot and wiggled it.
Smiling at her joke, he dipped his chin and said, “I’ll call when I’m on my way to get you.”
“I’ll be here.”
Sophie watched as he drove away. In her head, she said a little prayer that things weren’t about to turn ugly for the man who’d seemed to only just be finding himself, again.
