At least she hoped she was. Otherwise, it was going to be a long damn night.
“Wow.”
Her brow furrowed. “Wow, what?”
“You and Ryker.”
“She and Ryker, what?” Jason chose that exact moment to re-enter the room. He was staring back at her with a raised brow, clearly expecting a response to his question.
Shit. Please tell me he didn’t hear everything we said.
Olivia, God bless her, quickly came to her rescue. “Uh...I was just telling Sophie how lucky you both were. I mean, if that guy hadn’t taken off, who knows what would’ve happened.”
Sophie watched Jason closely, but she couldn’t tell whether or not he believed the woman’s story.
With a tip of his chin, he grabbed his suit jacket from the chair where he’d left it and slipped it over his broad shoulders. “You ready?”
“Yeah.”
Grabbing the paperwork from the bed, Sophie started to walk to the door. She stopped cold when she realized her feet were, well, cold.
“My shoes.” Her head swung back and forth between the other two. “I wasn’t wearing any when that man—”
Before she could finish the sentence, Jason was there. Bending at the waist, he wrapped one arm around her back and the other behind her knees.
Sophie let out a tiny squeal when he lifted her up as if she weighed nothing.
“What are you doing?” She instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck to keep from falling.
“Solving a problem.”
From behind her, Sophie heard Olivia mutter, “That’s one way to do it.”
“Jason, really.” She did her best to sound stern. “I can walk.”
“I know you can.”
“Then why don’t you put me—”
“Please,” he whispered softly, his brown eyes holding onto hers. “Let me do this.”
The request had Sophie’s heart skipping inside her chest. She gave him a single nod, and without another word, the big, alpha male turned and carried her from the room.
