Sophie’s eyes shot to his. From the expressions on the others’ faces, they were just as shocked by his statement as she was.

“I appreciate the offer, Jason, but that’s not necessary.”

“It sure as hellisnecessary,” he bit back. “You heard what Liv said. The doctor wants to keep you in the hospital for the night. So either you stay here, or you come home with me. This isn’t up for discussion.”

Uh...yeah. It actually was.

Straightening her spine, Sophie told the overbearing man, “I get that you’re used to ordering everyone around, but I’m perfectly capable of making my own decisions. Especially when they concern my safety.”

“Your safety is the reason I want you at my place.”

Because he cared for her, or because he felt some misplaced responsibility for what happened?

Does it matter?

“I’ll give you two a moment to discuss your plans for discharge.” Olivia excused herself and left the room.

“I think we have all we need for now,” Riley spoke up next. “If either of you think of anything else, give us a call.”

“Thanks, Riley.” Sophie looked over at Eric. “You, too, Eric.”

With a nod, the two detectives started to leave, but then Eric turned back around. “I almost forgot to ask...did the perp say anything to you before you blacked out?”

“Not that I recall, no.”

“Okay. Again, if you remember anything, even the smallest detail, let us know. And when you’re feeling up to it, we’ll need you to go to your house and see if anything’s missing. The sooner, the better. Just don’t go alone.”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” Jason assured him.

The two men shared a look before Eric and Riley left for good. And for the first time since coming to the hospital, Sophie and Jason were completely alone.

She knew she should probably say something but wasn’t sure what that something should be.

The last few hours had been such a rollercoaster of emotions. A myriad of events ranging from amazing to terrifying. All leaving her uncertain and confused.

He’d been so caring and compassionate at her house and then while he held her hand in the ambulance on the way here. But then, after being forced to let her go, Jason had grown quiet and surly.

And now, he was demanding she go home with him.

His intentions were pure. Of that, she was certain. The problem wasn’t him...it was her.

She had a hard enough time remembering tobreathewhen she was in the same room as him. How the heck was she supposed to survive spending an entire night with the mouthwatering man?

Especially after that kiss.

Not really what you should be worried about right now.

The voice in her head was right. He was only offering to take her to his home so he could take care of her. Not because he wanted to seduce her.

But that kiss he’d given her earlier had made Sophie want to throw all her inhibitions to the wind and jump his damn bones.

Hellooo....Break-in. Gunshot wound. Concussion. Remember?

Damn, she was having a hard time keeping herself in line. Maybe she hit her head harder than she thought.

Or maybe the man standing in front of her was making it impossible to concentrate on anything else.

You need to say something. Anything to break this awkward as heck silence.
