“Papers and scrubs, Brad.” Adrian snapped his fingers to refocus the kid’s attention. “Right. The fuck. Now.”
Looking like he was about to piss his pants, Brad stared slack jawed for another ten seconds before bobbing his head in a jerky nod. The kid damn near sprinted from the room.
Facing Gabe once more, Adrian opened his mouth to continue their argument about him staying put, but the asshole beat him to it.
“Theonlyreason I’m here is because the hospital called and told me they were stopping the drugs that were keeping you under. I knew you’d be waking up, and I needed to find out what the hell was going on so my team and I could start putting together a plan of action.”
Adrian didn’t even bother asking Gabe how he managed to bypass the whole HIPPA bullshit. He did, however, need to make one thing clear.
“Theplanis, I’m getting the fuck out of here, and then I’m going to find Jenna.”
He took a step but stopped immediately when pain shot up his thigh. With determination and fear for his woman pushing him on, he took another step…and another.
Adrian continued like that—hobbling around the room with his bare ass showing—while he opened drawers and cabinets looking for something to change into.
“Jesus Christ, Walker. You heard what the nurse said. You’re gonna end up busting open your stitches, which could mean you bleed out before anyone can do jack shit to help you. You won’t do you or Jenna any good if you’re fucking dead.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not—”
“I said, I’m fine!” Adrian whirled on the other man. The pain in his leg begged to differ, but he used it and his fear as fuel and kept on with his search.
Gabe continued his efforts to talk him out of leaving. “There’s nothing you can do that isn’t already being done, so just sit back down and talk to me. Maybe something Jenna said or did will help give us a clue as to who’d want to hurt her.” When Adrian didn’t respond, Gabe asked, “What was going on with Jenna before all this shit happened?”
I’ll tell you what was going on. I’m sleeping with her, asshole. I’m inlovewith her. That’swhat’s going the fuck on.
With his frustration growing, the other man kept on. “I spoke to the woman from Saje Staffing. She told me Jenna parted ways with the agency the day before you were shot.”
“Parted ways.” Adrian snorted as he checked the small built-in closet. “That’s one way of putting it.”
“Goddamnit, Adrian!” Gabe’s last string of patience snapped. “Will you please stop limping around the fucking room for five seconds and look at me?”
He did stop limping around, but only because there wasn’t a stitch of clothing to be found.
Gabe blew out a breath. “Let’s back up. Why didn’t you tell me about what happened the night Jenna went to the club?”
“Because I was too busy getting her the hell out of there.”
“You sure that’s all there is to it?”
The fuck? “You think I had something to do with this? Christ, man. I thought we were past all that shit.”
“What shit?”
“The you not trusting me bullshit. Have you forgotten your wife’s alive because of me?”
“No, asshole,” Gabe growled. “Ihaven’tforgotten. But that situation has nothing to do with this one.”
“Jenna didn’t want you or Ellena knowing about what happened to her.”
Something she’d shared with him when they’d laid in bed talking after one of their many rounds of incredible sex.
Adrian had mentioned filling Gabe in, but Jenna had immediately balked at the idea. To make sure he went along with her plan to keep the incident a secret from her two good friends, she’d then used her wild, wicked tongue to entice him to agree.
It had worked like a fucking charm.
“I don’t give a rat’s ass if she wanted us to know or not!” Gabe continued with his rant. “I sent you here to keep her safe, and instead, you—”
