“Eggs, grits, bacon, pancakes, and water.”
“What kind of eggs?”
“Over easy.”
“Classic pancakes?”
“And classic syrup.”
“Great. I’ll have what you’re having but with blueberry syrup and orange juice instead of water.”
“Alright.”
I nudged my head toward the waitress closing in on us. Stone ordered for both of us then leaned back in his seat. I checked my phone and did a quick post on my adult-only site before locking it and setting it face down.
“You got a husband?” he asked.
“Fuck no.” I laughed immediately. “I’m not that kind of woman.”
“What kind of woman?”
“The kind who can promise herself to one man forever.”
“Maybe you haven’t met the right man,” he countered.
“Stone, baby, there’s not a man on this God given green Earth that can tell me what the fuck to do and I promise that isn’t going to change.”
“Who’s trying to tell you what to do?”
“Husbands.” I gestured around absently. “They have expectations and want shit from you and…” I shook my head. “I’m good on that. Plus men swear they love you then want to change everything about you.” I rolled my eyes. “I’ve had too many boyfriends start dating me while knowing I was a hoe who suddenly want me to stop hoeing once we’re officially together. The idea of dating someone you actually like is a dead fucking art.” I looked over at the waitress as she set our drinks down. “Thank you.”
“Thank you,” Stone echoed.
I slipped a straw into my drink and took a sip.
“I need men to start dating who they actually like and the women they want to be with and marry. Instead of plucking up women who are nothing like who they want to marry and trying to change them.” I stirred my drink.
“Who says I’d try to change you?”
I shrugged. “Y’all always do.”
“I’m not them.”
“You’re a man, honey. That’s bad enough.”
Stone chuckled and I sat back in my seat. I ran my hands over my arms and looked around the little diner.
“You cold?”
“Hoes don’t get cold,” I shot back.
“Alright.” He grabbed his sweatshirt from where he’d thrown it in the booth before climbing in and tossed it to me.
I pulled it right on.
“You know I’m a sure thing, right, Stone?”
“A sure thing, huh?”
