There was nothing else interesting in the back, save for the pile of sawdust. There weren’t even sawhorses to use to cut wood.Whatever they’d brought in, they’d taken with them when they left. Her eyes landed on the house again.

Unless additional things were stored inside....

As she moved back to the front of the home, she realized she’d have to pick the lock.Radley hustled to her vehicle, retrieving her backpack, and then got to work. The simple combination lock took mere seconds to open, and Radley pocketed it, sliding her lock-picking tools into her backpack once more. She wasn’t about to leave the padlock lying around and end up locked into the cabin if someone showed up.

The front door swung open, the air inside smelling dusty and stale. She reached in, flipping on a light switch. No dice. While there’d been a generator off to one side of the cabin, she wasn’t going to turn it on just to search inside. She didn’t even know if there was propane in it, for that matter.

Radley took out a flashlight, shining it into the dark space. It was unlikely anyone was inside, but that didn’t stop the nerves from skittering through her anyway. She’d scouted out places alone before. This was no different than any other job.

She stepped inside the front door.

Disappointment flooded through her as she aimed her flashlight around the room.Aside from a lone wooden table and chairs, the place was empty. There was no other furniture, and there weren’t even tools by the fireplace, indicating no one had been spending much time here.If she checked the propane tank outside, it would probably be empty.

Whatever purpose they’d once had at this location, they’d boarded up the building and left.

Dust motes floated through the air in the beam from her flashlight. She moved across the dusty floor, realizing the people who’d been here had tracked in sawdust.Whatever they’d been doing had utilized both the inside and outside of the property. But why had they left, leaving it essentially abandoned?

She scanned the floor, and her heart pounded as she realized that sawdust wasn’t the only thing they’d left behind.A small slip of paper had fallen beneath the table, and as she bent to retrieve it, she eagerly scanned the front.

They’d left behind an address.

Chapter 5

––––––––

BOONE HOPPED IN HISpickup truck, heading toward the location Holt had given him to meet Radley. The little spitfire had already headed to the first spot on her own.He shook his head.It figured that she’d be headstrong. No one in this line of work would be happy to remain on the sidelines, staying out of trouble.Even in the hallway, he’d gotten a brief glimpse of her personality—she was holding her own with Holt. While the rest of the team had been meeting with him, she’d been already starting on a job.

His lips quirked.

He could appreciate her wanting to work alone.Didn’t mean he’d mind keeping watch though.

Adrenaline flooded through him.He was actually looking forward to running ops again. He’d gotten a brief taste of it when he assisted an old Army buddy of his.Gray Pierce’s girlfriend had been kidnapped, and Boone had rushed from DC to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to work with the Shadow Ops Team in rescuing her.Although he’d done it as a favor to an old friend, he’d realized he missed being part of something bigger than himself.

So here he was—heading out on his first official job.

Thirty minutes later, he was pulling up to an old warehouse. It wasn’t in the newer industrial area of Seattle and looked abandoned.Except while some of the other buildings nearby were boarded up, this one wasn’t.
