Knowing it would wake him, I leaned over and opened it, grabbing a log to shove inside.
Saint jumped, moving like a snake, but I was ready.
I caught him before he could incapacitate me quicker than Alexei had incapacitated Wheeler and co. “It’s me. Take a breath.”
Saint reared back as fast as he’d lunged at me. He blinked rapidly, green eyes heavy and confused.
I squeezed his wrist. “Put the knife down.”
Saint flicked a glance at the tool in his hand. Maybe I should’ve checked under his pillow before waking the beast, but here we were.
“The blade, brother.”
He let it go. It clattered to the floor at my feet and finally, his gaze cleared. “What are you doing here?”
I shrugged out of my jacket, gritting my teeth as the healing muscles in my shoulder protested, and toed off my boots. “I came to see you.”
“Why?”
“Move up.”
“What?”
I hauled myself onto his bed.
Getting the message, Saint scooted over and lifted the mess of smoke-scented blankets he called a bed.
I slid in beside him, glad I’d left the compound in workout gear, not denim and leather, the only good to come of driving an automatic SUV instead of my bike.
Whether he wanted to or not, Saint welcomed me in. His body heat consumed me, and I reached for him, tugging him against me. “You okay?”
He said nothing. Just buried his face in my neck, taking the breath he’d needed since he’d opened his eyes.
I rubbed his back. “I’d have chased you down sooner, but I drank too much rum waiting for you.”
“Sorry.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Where’s Alexei?”
“He took Mateo back to the Crows’ nest to plant new bugs.”
Saint raised his head. “Mateo?”
“A match made in heaven or a live hand grenade, I can’t tell.”
Saint zoned out, absorbing. Then he was back. “They told you what we saw?”
“Yup. But I didn’t come here for that. We can talk about it later, at church. For real this time, if we can keep the drama to a bare minimum.”
“You’re not worried about Alexei sneaking into a clubhouse with fifty extra soldiers?”
“Are you?”
He shook his head.
I let myself grin. “They won’t catch him. Now forget about it. Tell me why you ran away.”
