“For food,” I added dryly.“Remember your mom’s at the door.”
She snapped back to reality.“We’ll be right there!”
“Well, hurry up,” Carnie called.“I’ve had to fight Basil off the pancakes three times already.”
“Two minutes!”Clove yelled.“I’m getting dressed and Ender’s showering.”
I arched a brow.“I am?”
She pressed a finger to my lips.“Shh.You’re in the shower.”
I bit her finger gently.“You’re dangerous.”
Footsteps retreated down the hall.
Clove groaned.“You have two minutes before she sends my dad in here.”
“I do not want that man walking in,” I said, rolling off the bed.
“Me neither.”
I headed for the bathroom.
“Where are you going?”she asked.
“To the shower,” I said over my shoulder.“Since you told your mom I was in there.”
She huffed.“Oh.”
“Get dressed,” I said, turning the water on.“I’ll meet you out there in five minutes, baby.”
She agreed, and I listened to the door open and close behind her.
I stepped under the spray, letting the hot water beat down on me, trying unsuccessfully to wash away the thoughts of her lips, her warmth, and the way she fit against me as if she’d always belonged there.
She wanted me.
And now that I knew that?
There was no going back.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Clove
The clubhouse had started to feel… tight.Too many walls.Too many eyes.Too many reminders that something bad had happened, and everyone was waiting for it to happen again.
Here at the Social Club, I felt like I could breathe.
I sat at the bar with a glass of ice water in front of me and just relaxed.
Adley was behind the bar, already in motion, wiping things down, setting out napkins, and flipping stools upright. She moved like she belonged there, which she did.It didn’t even feel like she had been in Chicago for years.I knew it had been hard for her coming back home, but if you asked me, it couldn’t have turned out better for her.She finally got her man, and I had never seen her happier.
“You want something stronger?”she asked, nodding at my glass.
I laughed and shook my head.“Only if you’re drinking with me.”
She froze just for a split second.Barely noticeable if you didn’t know her. Then her eyes widened, and she glanced around like someone had just yelledsurprisein a quiet room.
