She shook her head. “Long story.”

“Thessa, is this some spell?”

She sat on the foot of Kellan’s cot. “Listen, I don’t have much time left. I just need to know something.”

He sat upright, scanning her with confusion. “What is it?”

“Do you really believe all shadow-wielders are bad? That just because someone told you they were, you believe it to be true?”

“What are you saying? Their magic is deadly by nature.”

“And what is yours?”

“Not the same.”

“That’s not true.”

Kellan rubbed at his eyes. “I’m going to ask you again, Thessa. What are you saying?”

She swallowed before speaking. “I’m a shadow-wielder. And there’s many of us.”

“What?” He looked around.

The guards that weren’t sleeping were preoccupied, and she’d dodged the ones that had chased her here between flickers. “There’s a rebellion,” she said quietly.

His demeanor shifted.

“We’ve been exiled for centuries, for no reason other than control and power. You could help us spread the word.”

Scratching his head, he said, “I don’t believe this.”

“Which part?”

He stood, gathering his uniform. “That I ever slept with something as filthy as you.”

A soldier stirred from behind her. “Who is that?”

Kellan answered, “No one.”

Her astral form was useless against feeling like she’d been stabbed in the heart. Flashing beyond resolution, Thessa disappeared.

Her eyes popped open.

Soren was perched over her. “What happened? You were twitching this time.”

Thessa sat up, scowling. “Nothing. We fight.”

LECTURE NOTES FROM REALM RULES & METHODOLOGY:

Celestial power arises from the moon and stars—light is what fuels their magic.

Wearing the black cloak given to her by Beatrix, Thessa and Soren rode through the mist-ridden capital. Despite the weather, her magic cast a perfect sphere of protection around them, warding off the onslaught of air-wrapped fireballs thrown their way.

Soldiers flooded the streets like a scarlet wave, no doubt a preparation order that had been placed by General Valstrom.

They’d managed to corral a majority of the soldiers on their way toward the towering gates.
