“No big deal on the timeline.” Derek scanned Dylan’s face. “Will you be able to take a break soon?”

“Should be. I hope you have a good run…” Dylan’s eyes drifted back to his workspace as he yawned again. He seemed to get tunnel vision in task mode.

“I’ll see you later.”

“Oh.” Dylan touched his back. “Real quick, still want to cut my hair later, or should I try to find a barber shop? I’m sure somewhere could fit me in.”

“I’m definitely going to cut it. Just make sure to evict whatever squirrel’s living in it now when you shower.”

Dylan gave him a mock glare. “So mean.”

“Sorry.” Derek ruffled the hair as if actually trying to dislodge a small furry mammal.

Dylan caught his hand, and as Derek yanked it back, Dylan followed the inertia. Derek pressed his hand to Dylan’s waist to steady him. As Dylan’s chin lifted, their teasing movements stilled. Derek’s thumb brushed over the sandpaper stubble on Dylan’s cheeks, as his fingers held the angle of his jaw.

“I looked for you when I woke up.” Derek couldn’t believe he said this aloud.

Happy surprise lit Dylan’s features. “Really?”

Nodding, Derek pulled him into a hug.

Another work call came in on the monitor behind them.

“You need to get that?”

“I’ll call him back in a second. Snack first.” Dylan leaned his full weight into the hug, pressing one hand into Derek’s lower back and reaching the other up to cradle his neck.

Derek pulled back enough so he could see the shade of purple beneath Dylan’s eyes. “Seriously, you going to get some sleep soon?”

“The update has to go out to California as soon as possible. The team needs to have the fixes to test everything before it goes to their jackass boss the next morning in Singapore.”

“This is making my brain hurt.”

Dylan squeezed Derek tighter. “Can we do the haircut around five? I can take a long nap and then shower, so I can human again.”

“I like this plan.”

Gus hustled over and whined at the door, which meant Joni was probably here, but with Dylan’s body pressed against his, Derek was regretting make the running plan. Especially since mesh shorts were as unforgiving as scrubs. “That’s probably Joni.”

“Should we start taking bets?” Dylan said with a smirk.

“On what?”

“On how many times a redhead will interrupt us when you have a—”

“You’re a dick, Dylan Gallagher.”

Dylan’s smug eyes flickered downward as he patted Derek once on the ass. “Enjoy your run, babe. Think about baseball.”

Baseball only made Derek remember how adorable Dylan looked in that Orioles cap. “You’re the actual worst.”

“You really think so?”

“Be right there, Joni.” Derek called to the door. Giving the too-tempting man a kiss, Derek shoved his hand into his pocket along with his keys and phone, hoping that would disguise the incriminating bulge. “Unfortunately, not at all.”

Chapter 28

“I’m going to puke.” Derek leaned on a bench near the rippling stripe of Carroll Creek.
