Why was the apartment door open?

“What’s wrong?” Felicity picked up Gus’s ball and threw it once.

“I hope you know a good lawyer because we might be arrested for dognapping.”

“What?”

“Derek told me I could take Gus on walks and short car rides during the day, but I might not have sent the text message about taking him out here today.”

“Ugh, double shit.” Felicity didn’t bother pretending she wasn’t reading the rest of the messages over his shoulder. “Do you think Uncle Sean left it open?”

“Probably. No wonder Derek’s freaked out. God, it’s a good thing Gus wasn’t there.” He typed out an explanation about what probably happened with Uncle Sean.

“I’d be freaking out too.”

“Christ, why didn’t Dad check the door?”

“Uncle Sean’s been getting more sensitive to that fact that something’s going on with his brain. It’s caused a few blowups.”

“Derek’s probably so pissed.” He patted his leg. “Come on, big guy, I need to take you home.”

Felicity shouldered her garden tool bucket. “Good luck.”

“You aren’t coming back to the apartment tonight?”

“Nah, I have more work to do here.”

“Cowardice doesn’t become you.”

“Tell McDickhead I’m sorry too. And give him my number if you aren’t going to make a move because I have a few gay friends who might be interested in that asshole, both metaphorically and definitely literally, if he’s into that kind of thing.”

Dylan whirled to face his sister.

Felicity’s smirk was as loud as if she’d also shouted “gotcha” at the territorial protectiveness she must have seen on his face. “God, I was only joking. Chill. But hurry and get the dog back so you guys can kiss and make up.”

“Shut up.”

“Love you.”

“Ditto.” He loaded Gus into the back seat of his Jeep onto the astonishingly expensive car seat sling thing they’d found this afternoon at a boutique pet store. “Still coming over to help me install Derek’s drywall tomorrow?”

“Sure. Dad’ll give me a ride.”

Before pulling away, Dylan shot off a final text.

DYLAN

I’m on my way. Be there in thirty. He ate dinner. Had water too.

K. Can you bring him to my apartment?

That wasn’t a good sign.
