“All you’ve been eating are those gross protein shakes and those weird Trader Joe’s fancy snacks.”

Again, he said this as if it explained why he’d kept a portion of the meat warm. This implied criticism was a bit ironic given Dylan’s diet, but Derek would allow it if it meant steak.

“So you made me dinner?”

“I made me dinner and just pre-portioned some of the extra in a separate bag so it would stay warm. I put some of the mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables on a separate plate.”

“You made me dinner and kept my portion of the meat warm? And there are plated sides?”

“If you don’t want it, you can give it to Gus. He’s been making sad eyes at me all night, but someone said he isn’t allowed to have people food. Even Heath Ledger belting to a marching band didn’t get him to chill out.”

“His stomach is getting more sensitive, and I don’t want him Dutch-ovening your bedroom.” Derek’s eyes flickered to the TV. Dylan had put the movie on again.

“Whatever. Just eat it if you want.” Dylan pulled out his headphone case and began unzipping.

“You cook steak in a fish tank?”

“No.” Dylan pulled the headphones on.

Well, just be like that then. He did a rude facial waggle that he knew Dylan wouldn’t see given how intently he was staring at his computer.

DEREK

Why would someone cook in a tank of water?

OLIVE

Sous vide? Oooh super fancy. You’ve reached the “cooking for you” stage? I need to tell Stella.

DEREK

Nope. He’s pretty adamant he made food for himself, and that he thinks I’m an asshole, but he’s not an asshole so he left out a plate of leftovers.

OLIVE

Sounds like great foreplay.

DEREK

Gross.

OLIVE

Joni texted me about what happened today. It sucks this shit keeps happening. Makes me not want to come back to the ED TBH.

“Oh crap.”

“What?” Dylan said pulling off one of the headphones.

“Nothing.”

“Kay.” Dylan restarted typing.

OLIVE

She thinks you could have a concussion.
