Olive’s grin widened.

Joni shook her head. “Here we go again.”

“You all have no idea what you’re talking about.”

DYLAN

The entire right side of my ass is asleep because your polar bear is cutting off blood flow.

DEREK

Cutting off blood flow to your ass? You’re still in the closet?

DYLAN

Why the hell else would I be complaining about my ass to you? Your dog just fell asleep on top of me. If he starts snoring, the jig is up.

A weird sensation came over Derek when he considered Dylan’s ass and exactly how it had looked and felt in the soaking wet jeans last night.

Nope. That’s a big dripping pile of N-O-P-E.

DEREK

Who says “the jig is up” anymore?

DYLAN

Can you focus on getting bird lady out of here rather than my choice of idioms please?

DYLAN

DO SOMETHING

Groaning, Derek swiped to Karen’s—crap—to Carol’s number.

“Hello, Mr. Chang. I’ve been waiting for your call.” Carol’s voice was closer to her parrot’s trilling squawk than should be possible. Was it like when people looked like their dogs?

“I’ve been working in the hospital.”

“Now, everything looks okay in your unit—”

“You’re in my unit?” Derek feigned shock. “I’m sorry, why are you in my home without an invitation?”

“If you read my texts, you’ll know that I was concerned there was an emergency—”

“Carol.” Derek’s current mental health nursing diagnosis could be termed an acute lack of fucks, so he didn’t bother to be polite. “Your desperate need to be nosy is not a goddamn emergency. Get the hell out of my house before I call the cops.”

“Well, I never—I was just…” She inhaled a flustered breath and then heaved a few affected sobs. “I had the best of intentions.”

“I’ll bet you did. I want to hear the door closing behind you.”

“Fine.” A door slammed.

“I’ll be coming by your unit tonight to get my key back.”

“I have that key for your safety. For the safety of the neighboring units. For my birds.”

“Pretty sure I’ll feel safer if you don’t have it anymore. Your birds will survive.”
