“It’s my confidence thong.” She turned around. The strings were like cobwebs. “Do you like it?”

“Fuck me, Wil.”

“Okay.” She laughed and pulled her shirt off, and her bra matched. It was black and see-through. Katie wondered what the fuck with this woman.

“No. I want to do my thing.” Katie had been experiencing some intense fantasies lately. Something about watching all those videos for a year, thinking about Wil, feeling what happened when she touched Wil, filming Wil with Noel, had made Katie want to imprint herself onto her. She wanted to taste her and bite her and command her and overwhelm her. She wanted to have Wil’s complete, utter, compulsory attention, because Wil was so powerful, so interesting, so everything.

It made Katie ache and her heart race every time she thought about it.

“Tell me what you want, Katie Kat.”

Gah.

“Get on the bed.” Katie meant to make it sound outrageously commanding, but in reality she whispered it. Still, she was glad to see that Wil’s breasts went pink. She crawled onto Katie’s bed, still in that terrible thong and bra, her hair extra messy from the studio styling. Then she lay back, holding herself up on her elbows.

“I don’t know how to do what I want to do,” Katie said. “But also, I feel like it can’t be that hard.”

Wil laughed. “I mean, it has a bad rap for being a high-level-of-difficulty activity, but its complexity is way overstated.”

“It turns me on just to think about it.” Naked now, on the bed, Katie licked Wil’s knee, and Wil closed her eyes.

“That is such a good start, Katie. Go with that. If it helps, it’s something I really, really like, and my delight in getting it tends to fill in where the technique could be better. I’ve never—oh fuck, fuck, fuck.”

Katie had experimentally dug her hands into the insides of Wil’s thighs to open them up, but then that looked so pretty, she did an experimental bite. Then Wil bucked and swore at her, so this was good.

Katie wasn’t nervous anymore.

She curled herself up between Wil’s legs and didn’t bother to take off the confidence thong. It was tiny, and it was already wet, and it looked amazing. When Katie tasted Wil for the first time and Wil started making noises, moving like she was desperate, the entire world narrowed to one point, and Katie felt so strong and fierce and hot that her entire body unfurled, her hands between her own legs, her mouth on Wil, everything sliding and building and throbbing.

When they were both close, Wil wanted it hard, and that was so good. It was so good. The way it made Katie feel was so good, and so much locked into place about Wil inside Katie’s heart. Inside her body.

This woman. For her.

It was such a great story.

The very best one.

Chapter Twenty-one

Wil knew that as soon as they left Sam Rafferty and Robin Dahl’s house, Katie would want to discuss Robin.

First of all,Katie had said after the first time they’d had dinner with the couple, she has Bambi eyes and falling-all-over hair like some kind of pearl dust–painted silent film star crawling out of a bed in lingerie.

From there, Katie had talked for a long time about Robin’s rhinestone-bedazzled shot silk romper that she’d worn with Ziggy knee socks. Katie had said Hollywood wouldlick Robin Dahl off a spoon and ask for more.

Where do you find these people?Katie had wanted to know. This woman teaches at our old high school! I can barely stand it.Then Katie had been quiet for a few long moments, the Bronco rumbling, before she started up again. Also, also, she talks fast and sharp, like Katharine Hepburn’s long-lost Wisconsin sister. She’s luminous!

Wil would be jealous, except this was how Katie talked about a lot of things these days. She and April were surrounding themselves with incredibly talented people who had richly textured life stories, amazing ideas for projects, and it was clear that Katie was in a near-constant state of inspiration. More and more, she let herself react. She chattered and emoted and waved her hands around, making her incomparable gestures, even when there were stakes. Especially then.

It was so good to see. It was both a return to how Katie had always been and a new thing—an expression of how Katie was leveraging her position in Hollywood. When they were in Los Angeles, there were not a few dinner parties that ran late enough that Wil would have to beg off and find a quiet place to study, listening to the laughter and conversation from the patio, the dining room, or their sunken living room.

It was everything Wil had never let herself want.

Tonight, they were in Green Bay at the beginning of a three-week summer break from Pepperdine before Wil would start an internship at a law firm in Culver City that worked primarily with entertainment clients. Katie didn’t actually have any time off at all, but she had habituated to herself to taking “vacation days” to line up with Wil’s schedule. She treated Wil’s law school breaks as sacred, given how little time Wil would have once she started practicing.

As if this were their long, last, senior year.

Katie hadalsocome here with Wil to Green Bay because Robin promised that the next time they came to dinner, she would tell them a story that resolved, once and for all, an old and extremely important mystery.
